The first and most notable difference in the Blue Lotus flower and the Blue Water Lily Flower is how they grow. Both the Blue lotus and Blue lily flower grow in similar environments.  ( out of warm muddy water ), The blue lotus flower's petals rise out of the water and do not touch the water, whereas the Blue Lily's petals lay flat on top of the water.

So The Blue Lotus Flowers petals do not touch the water after they grow and the blue lily flower of the nile's lily's float on top of water.  The Water Lily's (Nymphaea caerulea) have a very unusual petal pattern, which is longer and thinner than that of the Blue Lotus flowers petals.

The petals on the Blue lily are long and narrow whereas the petals on the blue lotus flower tend to be more plump and round.
